ABOUT THE 40 HOUR FAMINE

The World Vision 40 Hour Famine is New Zealand's most popular youth fundraising event.

Originating in 1975 in response to the immense famine in Ethiopia, 10,000 New Zealanders united together to raise $265,000. 35 years later it has become part of New Zealand youth culture with over 120,000 participating each year.

The theme of this year's World Vision 40 Hour Famine is 'going without for those without'. It’s an opportunity for Kiwis to lend a hand and raise money for children overseas who go without the basics. Basics, like clean water, healthcare, nutritious food and a decent education, that we often take for granted!

Anyone can participate in the 40 Hour Famine. Schools, church and social groups, businesses, friends, families and individuals all make up the tremendous number of participants in May of each year. Participants enlist the support of their friends and family to sponsor them and raise funds by going without for 40 hours.

The Trainathon team will be completing the equivalent of one month’s physical fitness training in this single 40 hour stint. All of the lads will complete the entire duration, and there will be no sharing or relaying.

World Vision appreciates the support of the Trainathon team in their 40 hour fitness challenge to raise funds for children overseas who go without.

The 2010 World Vision 40 Hour Famine takes place on May 21-23, 2010
